March is National Reading Month. It’s a time to highlight the importance of reading and to encourage children to pick up a book and read. Thank you to my friends at Holy Family School in East Tawas for allowing me to join the students for lunch and to read with them.

I recently met up with some great people in Gladwin County. I had a great time at the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce legislative breakfast and then spoke with area residents at the Gladwin County Leadership Forum. I love the opportunity to interact and listen to the residents of the 36th District.

Successful OK2SAY program approaches its fourth year
In 2014, Michigan implemented the OK2SAY program that sought to end bullying and provide a safer school environment for our students.

Nearly four years into the program, we are seeing positive results. Since September 2014, OK2SAY has received over 12,000 tips that have helped keep countless children safe. This proactive approach has also helped several students get the help they need.

The OK2SAY program empowers Michigan students with a 24-hour, 365-days-per-year confidential tip line, reachable by phone, text message, email, website and multimedia device to help prevent incidents in our schools. For more information, please visit www.michigan.gov/ok2say. Answers to frequently asked questions can be viewed here.

I applaud the program’s success and encourage all parents to print off and share the included OK2SAY contact card with their children.

Meeting with residents throughout the district
My aim is to provide the best service possible for the hardworking people of the 36th District. In that effort, I continue to host a regular series of office hours throughout the district and to hear directly from constituents about state and pocketbook issues.

I want to thank everyone who is able to come out to one of our district office hours, like the most recent one in Oscoda Township. I also want to remind residents who are unable to attend the office hours that you may contact my office toll-free at 1-855-347-8036 or via email at SenJStamas@senate.michigan.gov.

One of the best parts of serving the public is speaking to residents and hearing their viewpoints. Anyone who would like me to speak to their group is encouraged to contact my office to schedule a time for me stop by.

Burgess memorial highway bill signed
Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed my legislation to permanently honor Marine Lance Cpl. Ryan Burgess, who was killed by an improvised explosion device in Iraq in December 2006.

Ryan was a dedicated and fearless Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedom and way of life. He loved his family and his country, and the people of Sanford and the entire region were deeply saddened by his loss. This memorial highway will be a reminder of a native son who never returned home and an expression of our appreciation for his service.

Senate Bill 481, now Public Act 52 of 2018, designates a portion of US-10 from N. Stark Road to NW. River Road in Sanford as the “Marine Lance Corporal Ryan Burgess Memorial Highway.”

Ryan was a graduate of Meridian High School, and his parents, Jon and Kim Burgess, spoke before the Senate Transportation Committee in December in support of the bill.  [read more]

Tax season!
Residents who have not filed their taxes yet or want reliable and updated information can download the Michigan Taxpayer’s Guide 2018 from my website.

The easy-to-use booklet is a reference for the 2017 tax year and can help take some of the confusion out of preparing state tax returns. I encourage residents of the 36th Senate District to review this valuable resource concerning Michigan’s income tax, property taxes and tax credits.

The guide is meant as a helpful resource and not as a substitute for Michigan Department of Treasury tax instruction booklets. The federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act went into effect on Jan. 1, 2018 and does not affect individual income taxes for 2017. Click here to download the guide.

Michigan is also reminding taxpayers who filed a 2017 state return that they can check the status of their refund online at www.michigan.gov/wheresmyrefund. [read more]
