Robertson backs bills to reduce red tape for schools

  Erasing Red Tape

Less is more when it comes to cutting red tape and focusing school resources directly on the classroom and helping our children learn!

I recently supported a Senate package of bills to end unnecessary and redundant reports that schools must provide to state and federal agencies. The plan eliminates time-consuming, repetitive paperwork while making sure important information and data is still reported. By streamlining requirements, more time can be spent educating our kids and focusing on student achievement. The reform has received the support of education leaders across the state.

Senate Bills 754-767 have been sent to the House for consideration.

Annual budget process underway

The Senate recently approved a balanced budget plan ahead of schedule for the sixth year in a row. Our budget recommendations prioritize educatio

  Nearly $62 million increase for higher education;
  $12.3 billion for the School Aid Fund, $1.5 billion more than 2011;
  $9.8 million to hire 100 new Michigan State Police troopers; and
  Full funding for Healthy Kids dental program in all 83 counties.

As part of the budget process, the Senate, House and governor’s office will iron out differences and produce a final state budget. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Memorial Day: a time to honor our fallen

Memorial Day is a time for us to stand together and remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. Please take the time to honor our fallen heroes so their sacrifice is never taken for granted. We must never forget to preserve the “memorial” in Memorial Day.
