We hope everyone in the 7th District has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Week! What are we thankful for? Here is what Senator Colbeck had to say:

Sen. Colbeck Thanksgiving Message

MiABLE disability savings program now available

Most of us can be thankful that we do not have a person in our care that suffers from a major disability. For some of us that is unfortunately not the case, and it can become a worry thinking about how to provide for such loved ones after we are gone.

A new tool will help disabled individuals in Michigan better lead independent lives. The Michigan Achieving a Better Life Experience (MiABLE) account offers investment and tax incentives for families who want to save and provide financial stability for individuals with disabilities. The savings account can be used for qualified disability expenses, including care, education, housing, and employment training and support without jeopardizing the individual’s ability to qualify for necessary assistance programs. Find more information or register an account at or call 844-656-7225.

Michigan now joins four other states in providing a disability savings program.

Michigan Adoption Day

With the theme of “Giving Thanks for Families,” Michigan Adoption Day was celebrated on Nov. 22nd. The event is held each year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to finalize adoptions and educate the public about the adoption process.

Last year, more than 1,700 Michigan children were adopted from foster care into Michigan families. There are few other stronger expressions of love. If you have ever considered adoption in the past, now is a great time to determine if you can welcome a new Blessing into your family.

Arbor Hills Landfill Update

A priority for the office over the past several months has been working to address a dramatic increase in odor at the Arbor Hills Landfill outside of Northville.  Our efforts in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Northville Township Supervisor Robert Nix II, and many other interested parties had shown some progress in odor reduction, but particularly with this autumn’s warmer weather the smell has returned to unacceptable levels. New management has been hired at the landfill, and our office is working with the DEQ to issue additional enforcement mechanisms.

While some of these efforts are hampered by limitations under existing law, Sen. Colbeck is in discussion with incoming State House Representative Jeff Noble to introduce legislation next year to help better deal with the situation.  As people living with the issue are aware, part of the problem is that the landfill is located outside of the political jurisdiction of many of the people who are affected.  Sen. Colbeck is working with Rep. Noble to put into our laws a greater voice and protections for people who live outside of a landfill’s ordinary political boundaries.
