Small Business Roundtable meeting Aug. 15

Since being sworn in to represent the 10th District in the state Senate, I have made it my goal to listen to and get to know as many residents, business owners and families as possible so that I can best serve Macomb County.

In that effort, I am establishing a Small Business Roundtable as an opportunity to meet area business owners and discuss the issues facing them and their community.

I am excited to announce that the inaugural meeting of this new roundtable will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the main branch of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library, located at 40900 Romeo Plank Road in Clinton Township.

If you own a small business, I hope you will be able to join me for this discussion on how to make Michigan and Macomb County the best places for families, talent and job creators. If you know you can make it, please RSVP to my office at 517-373-7315.

Bill would allow police, firefighters to use EpiPens

In an emergency, it’s critical that responders can act quickly in order to give the individual the best possible care. Unfortunately, police officers and firefighters in Michigan currently are not authorized to carry or use auto-injectable epinephrine devices, commonly known as EpiPens.

I have turned in legislation to allow trained responders to carry this lifesaving drug. It would give someone experiencing an anaphylactic response to an allergy, cardiac arrest or an asthma attack a better chance at recovery. This is especially important in situations in which a child is having a response to a previously unknown allergy.

It simply doesn’t make any sense that first responders, like firefighters, are required to use Narcan to save lives from heroin overdoses, but they are prohibited from using EpiPens to help someone experiencing a dangerous allergic reaction. This reform will help save lives and improve care during the current nationwide supply shortage.

Senate Bill 418 would allow a law enforcement agency or fire department that is prescribed auto-injectable epinephrine to purchase the EpiPens and distribute them to their officers or firefighters who have been trained in how to administer the drug.

Recent articles by Consumer Reports and Bloomberg News report that a shortage of auto-injectable epinephrine continues due to manufacturing issues.

My Macomb video series

Over the summer I will be releasing a series of videos of me going to work at some of Macomb’s many great small businesses.

The first video in the “My Macomb with Mike MacDonald” series is at Fern Hill Golf Club, where instead of enjoying a Pure Michigan day of golfing I was put to work on the course.

Our small businesses are the heart of our community, and my goal is to showcase the hard work people at these local businesses do every day.

Family fishing fun

Fishing is a great way for families to spend a summer day! The third annual Take an Adult Fishing Day on Saturday, Aug. 3 encourages kids and parents to plan a fishing trip for time together in Michigan’s great outdoors.

Visit www.michigan.gov/fishing to find fishing locations by searching the Family Friendly Fishing Waters website or check out the state parks that offer the Hook, Line and Sinker program. These classes teach casting and fishing basics free of charge; young anglers under 17 do not need a fishing license.

Great time at the American-Polish Festival

The best part of my job is getting to meet so many wonderful constituents throughout the district. Recently, I had a wonderful time at the American-Polish Festival in Sterling Heights.

I want to thank Darryl Onderik from American-Polish Century Club for all his efforts to organize this fun event in our community.

Celebrating Filipino-American Friendship Day

Last month, the Michigan Senate approved my resolution recognizing July 20 as Filipino-American Friendship Day.

July marks the 73rd anniversary of the Treaty of Manila, which granted the Philippines independence from the U.S. in 1946 after having worked together to drive the Empire of Japan out of the country.

I believe that all Americans should be proud of the historic friendship between the Philippines and the United States. It is important that we teach our children and future generations the important lessons learned through this long and lasting relationship and the benefits that can be gained from cooperation with all cultures.

Senate Resolution 66 highlighted that as of the last census in 2010, there were 3.4 million Americans of Filipino descent living in the U.S., and just over 1% of the residents of Sterling Heights are Filipino-Americans — more than any other Michigan city.

It was an honor to recognize this as a special time for Michiganders to celebrate the valuable contributions and longstanding relationship between the Philippines and the United States and express our desire for a continued friendship for many years to come.
