New law promotes financial literacy for students

Learning how to budget and manage personal finances early in life can pay big dividends down the road.

I supported legislation — now signed into law — that allows schools to include a financial literacy component as part of the semester of economics required to earn a high school diploma. Understanding the basic principles involved with earning, spending, saving, borrowing and investing will help students acquire the skills they need to make sound financial decisions later in life.

Schools will not have to spend money developing the material as model curriculum for youth financial education is already available from the state Department of Education.

Robertson supports ignition lock legislation

It’s important to do all we can to keep our families safe on the road.

I recently supported Senate legislation that would create oversight for manufacturers and servicers of breath alcohol interlock ignition devices (BAIID). These devices help prevent drinking and driving behind the wheel by measuring the blood alcohol content of the driver before the vehicle can be started. The car won’t start if the level is above the minimum threshold.

More than 8,000 devices have been installed in the past three years alone as part of court-ordered sentencing programs. The bills would help ensure the devices are properly installed and serviced so they can’t be manipulated or misused.

Senate Bills 175, 176 and 357 have been sent to the House for consideration.

Tips on wise charitable giving

During the holiday season, many Michigan residents give generously to help others in need. Whether your donations help people in local communities or around the state, it’s important to know your contributions are safe and effective.

The Michigan Attorney General’s office recently released a useful resource - Helping Michigan Citizens Give Wisely - to help donors make wise charitable gifts. The guide provides consumer tips and links to other resources. Find it at; click on Consumer Protection and then Brochures on the left sidebar.
