Robertson supports legislation to support in-home caregivers

Following a hospitalization, many injured or chronically ill patients continue their recovery at home.

I recently supported legislation that would help train and support in-home caregivers to help loved ones after they leave the hospital. Under Senate Bill 352, hospitals would work with patients to develop a discharge plan that includes the training of a caregiver for assistance with the basic activities of daily living as well as instruction for any medical tasks, like administering wound care and medication injections.

Family caregiving is increasing in Michigan as spouses, children and others provide countless hours of care to loved ones. In fact, it is estimated Michigan has more than 2 million caregivers at any given time during the year.

Robertson backs bills to help provide best placement for foster kids

Approximately 13,000 Michigan children are in foster care at any given time.

The Senate recently approved legislation that would help keep family units together as much as possible. Senate Bills 482 and 483 would require a reasonable effort to place siblings together or provide for frequent sibling visitation. Senate Bill 485 would require frequent visitations between non-custodial, biological parents and their children unless it would be harmful to the child.

Foster homes provide a safe, supportive environment for children until they can be returned to their family. Spending time together can help preserve their family bond.

Stay informed on winter road conditions

Michigan weather can change in a minute - especially in winter! So take a few moments to be prepared before heading out on the road.

Motorists can check the Michigan State Police Winter Travel Advisory website for information on road conditions for the state’s freeways and trunk lines, which are the first to be cleared during winter weather. The site is updated twice a day or as information concerning travel conditions is received. Visit or call the hotline at 1-800-381-8477. Also keep in mind that if weather conditions appear to be too severe to travel, they most likely are.
