Green backs bill to ease prescription access

For many patients, prescription drugs are a vital part of health care. I recently supported legislation that would allow people suffering from a chronic condition who are prescribed multiple medications to get their prescriptions filled at the same time, eliminating the need for separate call-ins and pick-ups.

Medication synchronization helps ensure patients don't miss critical doses of their medication by allowing pharmacists to write "short fill" prescriptions so they all come due on a single date. Under Senate Bill 150, health insurance providers would prorate copay amounts so patients aren't required to pay a full month's copay even though they may be receiving less than a full month's supply.

Medication nonadherence - such as missing doses because a prescription was not filled or picked up on time - costs an estimated $290 billion each year in avoidable health care costs according to a study by the New England Healthcare Institute.

The legislation has been sent to the House for consideration.

Green sponsors call for federal balanced budget amendment

It is sobering to realize that our national debt is now more than $18 trillion and growing!

I sponsored Senate Bill 306, which would enter Michigan into an interstate compact to petition Congress to take the necessary steps toward proposing a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Once 38 states join the compact, they will then petition Congress to refer the amendment vote to the states where it would have to be ratified by three-fourths of the states before taking effect.

This common sense legislation would require an annual federal budget in which spending does not exceed revenues, except in the case of a national emergency. At the state level, we balance the budget every year as required by our Michigan constitution. It's time for Washington to do the same or our kids and grandkids will face a staggering burden of debt.

Senate bills promote firearm safety

I recently supported legislation to exempt gun safety devices from state sales and use taxes.

Senate Bills 364-365 would make products such as gun safes, lock boxes, and trigger and barrel locks more affordable for all gun owners. Safe storage can help prevent accidents and potential firearms thefts.

The bills have been sent to the House Committee on Tax Policy.

Michigan apples are a fall tradition!

Apples are one of nature's perfect foods - nutritious and delicious!

As the third-largest apple-producing state in the nation, there's no better place than Michigan to find this fresh and tasty fruit. Visit www.michiganfarmfun.com to find a nearby farmers market or U-pick farm, or check your local store for Michigan apples.
