Plymouth Township Receives 1st Payment on Plymouth Firefighter Pension Tab

Plymouth Township and Plymouth have taken a first step to reach a settlement in a longstanding disagreement involving health care and pensions for retired firefighters who served both the city and the township. On July 19, Plymouth Township officials formally agreed to accept $330,558 from the City of Plymouth, which begins the path towards covering these costs.

In an effort to save money, Plymouth left the then Plymouth Community Fire Department (PCFD) in January 2012 to partner with the City of Northville's Fire Department and the PCFD was renamed the Plymouth Township Fire Department.

As Matt Jachman explains in a recent Hometown Life article, "the money represents Plymouth's portion of what the township paid toward health care for retired firefighters from Jan. 1, 2012, when the city left the PCFD, through last year." This is part of a nearly $4 million tab that township officials say the city owes to meet these needs.
