Green backs first-time homebuyer bills

Owning a home is a big part of the American dream. To ensure Michigan is an attractive place for people to put down roots, it makes sense to help make housing affordable for the next generation of homebuyers.

I recently supported legislation to allow Michigan residents to create a savings account for use as a down payment or closing cost assistance on a first-home purchase and provide a tax deduction for contributions and interest earned on the account. Senate Bill 511 creates the Michigan First-time Home Buyer Savings Program. SB 512 provides an income tax deduction of up to $5,000 for a single filer or $10,000 for a joint return on contributions made to the savings account for up to 20 years. Withdrawals made for a non-qualifying purpose would be penalized.

The legislation will help people save for homeownership and encourage our young people to live, work and raise their families in Michigan. The bills now head to the governor for consideration.

The Aging and Adult Services Agency (AASA) recently released a new resource guide to help Michigan seniors and their families better access local services to help seniors live safely and independently at home.

A Guide to Services for Older Adults provides contact information for the state, local and federal organizations that can connect people to services like Meals on Wheels, caregiver support and in-home care. Visit www.michigan.gov/aasa to download a copy of the document.

Most rest areas open during the winter

Nearly all the state’s 77 rest areas are scheduled to remain open this winter for the convenience of motorists. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close five areas due to safety concerns and reduced use during the winter months. The rest areas closed until April 24, 2019 include:

• St. Ignace Rest Area on southbound I-75 in Mackinac County
• Ludington Rest Area on northbound US-31 in Mason County
• Topinabee Rest Area on northbound I-75 in Cheboygan County
• Hebron Rest Area on southbound I-75 in Cheboygan County
• Hart Rest Area on southbound US-31 in Oceana County

Visit www.michigan.gov/restareas to see a map of all the rest area locations around the state, along with information on the services available.
