Join me at my coffee hours

I’m sorry I was unable to make my last coffee hour due to a special session and hope that you will join me on Friday at my coffee hours at the Clinton-Macomb Library North Branch in Macomb. During my last coffee hour, the Michigan Senate met on a Friday for the first time since 2012 to make historical changes to our auto insurance system. We were able to pass real reform to auto insurance to offer rate relief that Macomb County drivers deserve.

I will continue to hold coffee hours throughout the district so that I can hear what your top priorities are and will work to continue to deliver on what is most important to our community.

I will be releasing the times and locations for my summer coffee hours soon so make sure you follow my Facebook page for the latest information.

Senate’s responsible budget plan

The Senate recently approved a balanced budget plan that would increase funding for schools and roads to record levels without raising taxes by $2.5 billion.

The plan fixes our aging roads and supports our students, while also continuing our economic recovery and building a brighter future for all Macomb County families.

Under the Senate budget plan, we will have increased our annual transportation spending by over $1.75 billion in a decade and boosted annual state funding for schools by more than $2.6 billion over the past several years.

The K-12 School Aid budget would invest $15.2 billion in education, a total increase of nearly $400 million. Schools would see a foundation allowance boost of between $135 and $270 per pupil — which is $107 million more than the governor’s plan.

The Senate’s budget includes $51.2 million more in constitutional revenue sharing for local governments, a $120 million investment in drinking water protections, and an additional $132 million for local roads — fully implementing $1.2 billion from the 2015 roads plan a year ahead of schedule.

I am happy to have worked on a budget plan that provides the vital services people use every day and that lives within our means.

As we work with the House of Representatives and governor’s office to complete a balanced budget on time, I will always keep you in mind. We all deserve a budget that supports our schools, fixes our roads, protects our communities, makes your government more efficient and attracts new businesses and jobs to our state — all without asking you for more in taxes.

This Saturday and Sunday, Michigan residents and out-of-state visitors can enjoy the state’s Summer Free Fishing Weekend as well as a free off-road vehicle weekend and free entry into all state parks.

The free fishing weekend is a tremendous opportunity for families to pass down the love of fishing to the next generation. Anglers can fish without a license on these two days, though all other fishing regulations still apply. Entry into state public boating access sites, state parks and recreation areas is free of charge. Visit www.Michigan.gov/FreeFishing for more information.

In addition, June 8-9 marks the first of the state’s two summer free ORV weekends, when off-road enthusiasts can ride on designated routes and trails without an ORV license or trail permit. Riders can find out more at www.Michigan.gov/ORVInfo.

It was an honor to participate in the Sterling Heights Memorial Day ceremony and parade. This was the 40th year that the event was held. It is a great event that honors our fallen heroes and the sacrifices they made to preserve our freedom and way of life.
