Robertson supports new law to raise awareness of human trafficking

Human trafficking, or forced prostitution or servitude, is often called the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world and it is more prevalent in Michigan than many people realize. In fact, there were 152 human trafficking cases reported in our state last year.

I supported recent legislation—now law—to raise public awareness about this crime and help victims. Public Act 62 of 2016 requires the National Human Trafficking Hotline number (1-888-373-7888) to be posted at rest stops and welcome centers, bus and rail stations, airports and other places. More than 30 states now have a similar “poster” or “hotline” law on their books.

Robertson encourages residents to prepare for severe weather

  Severe Weather

A Michigan spring can bring fast-changing weather conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning and high winds as well as rapidly warming temperatures

Severe Weather Awareness Week, held April 10-16 this year, encourages Michigan residents to prepare before severe weather strikes to minimize damage and help keep everyone safe. Visit the Michigan State Police website www.michigan.gov/beprepared and learn what to do before, during and after any type of emergency.

Michigan hunters practice safety first

For the second season in a row, Michigan recorded no hunting fatalities.

There were 13 injury incidents reported for 2015, with 60 percent of those described as self-inflicted gunshot wounds. With nearly 651,600 base licenses sold during the 2015 season, Michigan’s hunting incident rate per license stands at .002 percent.

Since a record high 275 hunting-related injuries in 1974, injuries have steadily decreased most years. Law enforcement officials credit the state’s hunter education program as an important factor in this downward trend. The 2015 hunting incidents report is available at www.michigan.gov/conservationofficers under Law Enforcement Reports.
