| | Victory’s legislative update | Senate Bill 527 would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate U.S. 31 between Robbins Road and Jackson Street in the city of Grand Haven as the Officer Scott Flahive Memorial Highway.
Officer Flahive was a police officer for the Grand Haven Department of Public Service. He graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1985, from Grand Valley State University in 1990, and from Grand Valley State University Police Academy in 1990.
On Dec. 13, 1994, Officer Flahive stopped a vehicle that contained two escaped criminals and two accomplices for a speeding violation. The two criminals had just escaped from Ottawa County Jail.
As Flahive approached the vehicle, one of the escaped criminals fatally shot him in the hip with a hunting rifle. Scott Flahive was 28 years old.
Senate Bill 379 would establish a pilot program to examine the use of organic additives, such as liquid sugar beet byproduct, in ice control on public roadways.
Salt only works to temperatures of -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Mixing organic additives to salt has been shown to allow the mixture to work in even colder temperatures.
SBs 527 and 379 have been sent to the House Transportation Committee for consideration. | As fall hunting season takes center stage, it’s time to focus on hunter safety. Many people don’t realize that the majority of deer hunting injuries and deaths involve tree stand falls.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources encourages extra precautions when hunting from a tree stand. Find general safety reminders and safety tips on tree stands, firearm use and hunter orange at www.michigan.gov/huntingsafety. Check the 2019 Michigan Hunting Digest for the rules and regulations on hunting from raised platforms and tree stands. | Victory town hall - Monday, Nov. 4 | I will be hosting a town hall on Monday, Nov. 4 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Loutit District Library at 407 Columbus Ave. in Grand Haven.
