Dear Friends:
I hope 2023 is off to a good start for you and your family.
I am the new state senator for the new 18th District – covering all of Barry County and parts of Allegan, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, Kent and Ionia counties. This newsletter is designed to introduce myself to you and provide updates on what is happening at the state Capitol.
Please feel free to contact me with any issues related to state government. I look forward to working for you and with you to make Michigan an even better place to live and raise a family.
Sincerely,
|

A little bit of background

I come to the Senate after serving six years in the Michigan House of Representatives.
My family has lived in Kent and Ionia counties for generations. My wife Erica and I are raising our five children in the Lowell area. My family, with my parents, joined me recently as I took the oath of office on the Senate floor.
I attended both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Before joining the Legislature, I served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as an investor for the State of Michigan Retirement Systems.

The new legislative term is just beginning. But I can tell you I will fight for tax relief that is fair and simple and helps as many Michiganders as possible.
I will work to ensure we have a state budget that invests responsibly and eliminates unwise spending – respecting the taxpayers who pay for public services. I will fight to keep Right to Work laws that protect workers’ freedoms and improve the economy.
I will fight to protect life as the next steps evolve after voter approval of Proposal 3 in November 2022. I will continue to support our Second Amendment rights.
These are just a the few of the issues I expect to arise fairly early in the new legislative session. I plan to update you on these and many other topics as time goes on.

I am a former chair of the House Appropriations Committee, and I will be able to continue that important work in the Senate with my new committee assignments.
I will serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee as the top-ranked Republican on the General Government, Universities and Community Colleges, and Michigan Department of Education subcommittees. I also will be a member of the PreK-12 budget subcommittee. Additionally, I will serve on the Senate Labor Committee.
