Lauwers introduces legislation to improve election integrity

Last month I introduced legislation to help safeguard secure elections in the state and give every voter confidence in the results.

My measure is part of a comprehensive, 39-bill package introduced by Senate Republicans to ensure election access and integrity in Michigan to restore trust in a system vital to democracy in the state.

Everyone must have confidence that our elections system is fair, safe and open. The reforms introduced will increase transparency in the process and ensure people are guaranteed access to secure elections.

Lauwers co-sponsors senior income tax relief bill

I recently co-sponsored a bill to provide income tax relief for seniors.

Senate Bill 359 would amend Michigan’s pension tax deduction to allow all residents 67 or older a deduction against all income, not just pensions.

Michigan’s seniors have worked hard all their lives and deserve to live their golden years unencumbered by excessive taxation. This bill will provide tax relief seniors deserve.

To help students recover academically, the plan would require school districts to offer individual academic assessment and recovery plans by May 15.

Senate approves funds to investigate governor’s COVID-19 nursing home policy

The Senate has approved a supplemental budget bill to provide funding to investigate the Gov. Gretchen Whitmer administration’s failed policy of putting people who had COVID-19 into the state’s nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

Senate Bill 27 would provide up to $250,000 to support investigations by county prosecutors into long-term care and residential care facility COVID-19 policies implemented by the governor and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The families who have lost loved ones during the pandemic deserve to have closure.

Lauwers co-sponsors bill to fund special investigator into nursing home policies

Related to Senate Bill 27 is legislation I co-sponsored last month that would fund a special investigator to look into the Whitmer administration’s COVID-19 nursing home policies.

Senate Bill 338 would designate funding for the purpose of investigating the nursing home policies implemented by the Whitmer administration as well as the data and all of the subdata beyond just total numbers of deaths, including the numbers of cases and deaths attributed to transferring patients to and from hospitals, and whether patients died in the hospital or the long-term care facility.

The administration’s executive orders put COVID-19-positive patients into the same facilities as our most vulnerable. Michigan was one of only five states to implement this dangerous policy.
