Mark Huizenga
State Senator

First day of session

Michigan’s constitution requires that the Legislature meet “on the second Wednesday in January of each year at twelve o’clock noon” to begin a new legislative session. On Jan. 10, the Michigan Senate met to begin the 2024 regular session.

The Michigan Senate consists of 38 members who are elected by the residents of each district. Senate districts are made up of approximately 250,000 residents and are elected at the same time as the governor to serve four-year terms concurrent with the governor’s term of office.

Visit the Michigan Senate website for the 2024 session dates and committee schedules, links to current legislation, and information about visiting the state capitol.

2024 priorities

I was disappointed that 2023 was one of the most partisan years on record. My hope going into 2023 was for a new perspective and for more bipartisanship. I’ve always been someone who is willing to put aside political differences and work with anyone to solve problems for families in West Michigan.

I understand that Michigan families expect us to work together and find common ground, without compromising our values, to improve our state. In 2024, I will continue to work on bipartisan solutions for the people of West Michigan.

When necessary, I will also fight any efforts to push through bad policies that make Michigan a less desirable place to raise a family.

My 2024 priorities include:

• Raising the bar for education in our state instead of watering down standards.
• Giving every student the support they need to succeed.
• Putting your money back in your pocket instead of growing the size of state government.
• Giving police departments the resources they need to keep our neighborhoods safe from drugs and gangs.
• Ending Lansing Democrats’ dangerous practice of giving your tax dollars to foreign companies associated with hostile nations.
• Protecting vulnerable children in foster care and juvenile facilities who have been failed by Gov. Whitmer’s administration.

District office hours on Jan. 19 and 25

I am holding in-person office hours throughout the district on a regular basis because hearing directly from the people about the issues they are facing is an important part of representing everyone in West Michigan. These meetings give local residents a chance to express their viewpoints about what needs to be done and offer help to people dealing with a variety of state issues.

This month, I will be available to meet with constituents at the following dates, times and locations:

Friday, Jan. 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Starbucks, 4370 Lake Michigan Drive, in Walker and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Starbucks, 6370 Lake Michigan Drive, in Allendale (located inside Family Fare).

Thursday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Brody’s Be Cafe, 7267 Thornapple River Drive SE, in Ada and from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. at Grand Coney, 809 Michigan St. NE, in Grand Rapids.

Office hours are open to all residents, and no appointment is necessary. Anyone who is unable to attend the office hour may contact my office.

Video highlighting Walker

The residents of the city of Walker already know what a wonderful community it is to call home.

To those who don’t live in Walker, I wanted to share a short video about some of the things that make my hometown a great place to live, work, raise a family and even start a business.

Snowmobile season

Jan. 12-22 is Snowmobile Safety Awareness Week. Michigan is home to 6,500 miles of state-designated snowmobile trails. A 2023-24 trail permit can be purchased online through eLicense or the Michigan Snowmobile & ORV Association website or in person at several DNR license agents and dealers.

Permits are good through March 31 and enable riders to access state-designated trails and thousands of miles of public roads.
