Budget Update:

Senate Appropriations Committee adopts budget plan

Last week, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a fiscal year 2023 state budget plan that reduces debt and saves resources to provide tax relief for everyone in Michigan.

While Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Democrats have prioritized growing state government, our budget plan puts hardworking folks struggling with record-high gas and grocery prices first.

The Senate’s budget plan invests nearly $2 billion into local roads, creates a new scholarship that directly follows students to help address costs to attend universities or community colleges, and more — all while living within our means.

The General Government budget, which I chair, sets aside $2 billion to provide tax relief to all Michigan families. Half of the funds are ongoing resources and half are one-time funds. The funds will be set aside to be negotiated with the House and the governor’s administration through the remainder of the budget cycle as we continue working to address the rising costs of everyday household expenses.

SBs 827-843 will be voted on by the full Senate this week. Formal negotiations with the House and the Administration are planned to begin after the May Revenue Estimating Conference, which will set official revenue numbers for the next state budget.

Crime Victims Vigil

I was honored to be asked to speak at the Crime Victims Vigil last week in the Capitol Rotunda as part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, I presented the Champion for Crime Victims Award to Cass County Prosecuting Attorney Victor Fitz from the Crime Victims Foundation in recognition of his work on behalf of crime victims.

In 1982, the Crime Victims Foundation was established to provide a “safety net” to assist victims of crime in Michigan.
