Muskegon County Wastewater Project Receives Approval

Download images to view this photo

Earlier this month, the Michigan Legislature transferred $60 million from the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve (SOAR) Fund for the Southeast Regional Force Main Project in Muskegon County. On the final session day of the 101st Legislature, the state House of Representatives approved the project, solidifying the funds to start and complete the project.

The project creates a pipeline from the Coopersville area and runs into the Muskegon County wastewater treatment plant. For many years, farmers, producers, and other industries have been burdened by strict regulations set forth by state departments, thus leaving them at risk of failure and hindering their potential for growth in West Michigan.

Now with the approval of the project and the funds to start and complete the pipeline, it is estimated the pipeline will bring in an additional $187 million in private investment and will create 145 more jobs.

High-speed Internet Coverage Map and Challenging Access

Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office (MIHI) are encouraging every Michigander to challenge the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) new broadband map.

Many homes across our state and my district do not have access to high-speed internet. In an effort to better map areas that do not have access to high-speed internet, the FCC created a map that shows high-speed internet availability, and areas that are not yet covered. This map is not perfect, so LEO and MIHI are asking that everyone view the map to ensure it is correct at your home address and business.

To view the preliminary broadband map created by the FCC and to challenge access to high-speed internet, please see the directions below.

1. Visit Broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home and type in an address and see if the reported coverage is accurate. You can access the site from a computer or a mobile device.
2. Residents can submit a challenge by clicking “Location Challenge” if the location of their home or business is missing or incorrect, or “Availability Challenge” if the internet service information is incorrect.
3. Residents should visit the website of any internet service provider that claims to serve their location and use the website's "Check Availability" or similar tool to determine if the provider can serve their location.
4. If they can't, a screenshot of their website can be submitted to the FCC as evidence for an availability challenge.

Safe Winter Driving

As we continue to see more snowfall across the state, please remember to drive safely. Between 2016 to 2020, the Michigan State Police reported 202,232 crashes resulting in 370 fatalities, due to winter driving conditions. Before heading out on icy roads, drivers should double-check to see that their vehicle is in good working order, check the forecast and road conditions, and prepare an emergency kit to keep in the vehicle.

End of 101st Legislature

On Jan. 1, 2023, the Michigan Legislature will move into its 102nd legislative term. This means any bills that were introduced during the last term, the 101st Legislature, will need to be introduced again in the new term or they will perish.

Over the last legislative term, my office and the Michigan Legislature were able to accomplish a lot. As we move into 2023, my office and I are ready for the new challenges that the 102nd legislative term will bring. I am proud to continue to be your voice in Lansing and will continue to accomplish goals and needs for West Michigan. As always if there is anything my office can do to assist you, please let us know.
