Looking to other states on how to boost education outcomes

Despite record spending, our state is failing our kids when it comes to education. I recently submitted a guest editorial to The Detroit News discussing how Michigan can learn from other states to provide the best education for our kids and future generations.

Click here to read the article and learn more about how we can get Michigan students back on the right track and set our kids up for a successful future.

Huizenga partners with West Michigan Sports Commission

My office is partnering with the West Michigan Sports Commission to encourage volunteers to participate in a special event from July 11 through July 17.

The commission will be hosting The Hartford Nationals, conducted by Move United. This year marks the 68th year of competition for the largest and longest-running national sport championship event for athletes with a physical disability, visual impairment or intellectual disability.

There are roughly 150 volunteer spots we need to fill, and I encourage those who are interested in helping make this event a success to sign up by clicking here. More information can be found here.

Huizenga supports efforts to restore Right to Work

I recently supported legislation to restore Michigan’s Right to Work protections and repeal prevailing wage laws passed by Democrats in 2023.

Michigan now has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Restoring Right to Work would make our state a more attractive place to do business and create more economic opportunity and freedom for workers.

The bill package includes:

Senate Bill 436 to restore Right to Work in the private sector, letting workers choose whether they want to join a union.
SB 437 to put Right to Work status in place for the public service sector in Michigan law, consistent with a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing public sector employees to opt out of paying union dues.
SB 438 to eliminate general prevailing wage requirements.
SB 439 to repeal prevailing wage requirements for public utility projects.
SB 440 to repeal prevailing wage requirements for alternative energy projects such as wind and solar.

Explore Michigan’s state parks

With 103 state parks and recreation areas, Michigan offers endless opportunities for summer fun. Enjoy camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking and boating — plus nature programs at over 30 state park and recreation areas.

Last year, nearly 120,000 guests took part in these free, hands-on nature programs. Explorer guides lead hikes, give talks and spotlight each park's unique resources.

Learn more and find weekly program schedules at Michigan.gov/NaturePrograms.

Recreation Passports can be purchased through the secretary of state or at park entrances.

Help stop aquatic invasive species

Michigan’s Invasive Species Program relies on reports from the public to stop the spread of invasive species.

Early detection is key to protecting our waterways. Eighteen aquatic invasive species are on Michigan’s Watch List, including 10 aquatic plants, five fish, two crayfish and the New Zealand mud snail.

Report sightings at misin.msu.edu or by using the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network mobile app.

July is National Blueberry Month

Michigan is one of the nation’s top blueberry producers, growing over 20 varieties across 17,000 acres and providing more than 6,600 full-time jobs.

Most commercial blueberries are grown in southwest Michigan, where sandy soil and high water tables in Allegan, Berrien, Muskegon, Ottawa and Van Buren counties make ideal growing conditions.
