Dear Friends,
With three months of the legislative session underway, my staff and I are hard at work listening to your concerns, writing legislation, and working hard for the families, small businesses and communities in our district.
We’ve hit the ground running this year, with accomplishments like:
▪ |
Introducing a bill to end income tax on hourly overtime. |
▪ |
Striking a deal to preserve the tipped wage credit and save over 50,000 jobs. |
▪ |
Developing legislation to restore local control of energy. |
My team and I have also been busy listening. In the last three months, we’ve responded to thousands of letters and emails, answered hundreds of phone calls, and taken countless meetings with constituents and stakeholders from across our communities.
As we continue to make our way through the legislative session, I want to make sure that your voice is heard. If you have any questions, want to set up a meeting, or need help with casework, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at SenMHoitenga@senate.michigan.gov or 517-373-7946.
Sincerely,

Big news: It’s time to stop taxing overtime
There is a group of Michiganders who are often overlooked in this state — the middle class.
With many families in our communities struggling to make ends meet, it is time to take a new direction that prioritizes economic relief for the forgotten families of Michigan’s middle class.
That’s why I’ve introduced legislation that would eliminate the state income tax on hourly overtime.
Senate Bill 125 would bring meaningful, long-lasting relief to hardworking Michiganders who serve as corrections officers, nurses, construction workers, truck drivers and many others.
I look forward to working on both sides of the aisle to get this legislation passed.

State of the State: Governor is out of touch with Northern Michigan
Recently, I stood on the floor of the state House and watched the governor deliver her seventh State of the State address.
As I listened to the speech, it was clear to me that the governor’s agenda is out of touch with Northern Michigan.
I’ll support a bipartisan agenda that uses taxpayer money wisely, brings tax relief, and lowers energy costs. But I will never support tax increases, wasteful spending, or half-baked, partisan solutions.
You can read more of my reaction in my recent column by clicking here.

If you know Northern Michigan, you know Fred Bear.
Fred Bear’s life, love of the outdoors and legacy in conservation have made positive impacts on outdoor sports that will last for generations.
To honor his legacy, I submitted a resolution to recognize March 5, 2025, as Fred Bear Day in Michigan, which was passed by the Senate.
