Mark Huizenga
State Senator

Join me for a town hall meeting on March 20

One of the most important parts of being an effective senator is listening to the people you represent and discussing possible solutions to the problems facing them and their families.

Please join me on Thursday, March 20, as I host a town hall meeting to provide an update on state government, share my legislative priorities, and answer questions on state issues that matter most to the people of West Michigan.

The event is scheduled to run from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Krause Memorial Library, located at 140 E. Bridge St. NE in Rockford. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and space is limited to 50 attendees.

I encourage folks to send in their questions, and anyone who is unable to attend the event can also contact my office to share their thoughts about the future of our state and region.

Questions for the town hall or comments to my office may be submitted at SenatorMarkHuizenga.com/contact.

Earned sick leave resources for workers and businesses

On Feb. 21, Michigan’s new Earned Sick Time Act went into effect. This new law allows for increased flexibility for workers to earn paid sick leave.

The new reforms will be phased in over time, giving small businesses time to adjust.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity has developed resources to help both workers and businesses understand the changes. Visit their website to:

March is Reading Month

March is Reading Month and one of my favorite times of the year! Each March, we celebrate the importance of reading. Studies show that regular reading improves brain and memory function, increases vocabulary and comprehension, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, reduces stress and improves sleep patterns.

Every year, I visit different schools throughout the district, reading to the kids and sharing the importance of reading and expanding our minds.

NorthPointe Christian Elementary and Cummings Elementary were two of the schools I visited this month. Thank you to all the schools that have hosted me and for letting me share my love of reading with their students.

Mayor’s Youth Council

I was happy to welcome the Grand Rapids Mayor’s Youth Council at the state Capitol earlier this month. I talked with them about my role as a state senator and answered their questions on important policies and issues facing our state.

During my time as mayor of Walker, I was proudly involved in the city of Walker Youth Commission. The youth commission helps shape our future leaders and is a great opportunity for high schoolers living in their respective cities to learn more about city government.

El Globo Restaurant tribute

Congratulations to the El Globo Restaurant on the opening of its new location in Grand Rapids Township.

If you are looking for a delicious and traditional dish from the Mexican state of Jalisco, head over to El Globo. My office was honored to celebrate the new opening by presenting a special tribute to restaurant owners Oswaldo and Evangelina Cordova.

District office hours on March 21 and 24

I am holding in-person office hours throughout the district on a regular basis because hearing directly from people about the issues they are facing is an important part of representing everyone in West Michigan. These meetings give local residents a chance to express their viewpoints about what needs to be done and offer help to people dealing with a variety of state issues.

This month, I will be available to meet with constituents at the following dates, times and locations:

Friday, March 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Grand Rapids Chamber, 250 Monroe Ave. N. W. in Grand Rapids.
Monday, March 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Starbucks, 4370 Lake Michigan Drive in Walker.

New car seat law takes effect

Michigan’s updated car seat law goes into effect April 2. The new law makes changes to car seat use based on height, weight, and age. The new law requires

Children under 2 must remain in a rear-facing child car seat unless they have reached the height and weight limits set by the manufacturer.
Children ages 2 to 5 must be in a forward-facing car seat with an internal harness that straps over the shoulders and around the hips.
Children under 8, or those shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches, must use a belt-positioning booster seat.
Children under 13 who have outgrown a booster seat must still sit in the rear seat.

2025 Michigan fishing licenses

Fishing licenses for Michigan’s 2025-26 season — opening on April 1 — are now available and will be valid through March 31, 2026.

All anglers ages 17 and older are required to purchase a license to fish in Michigan. Licenses are good for all species, though additional reporting requirements apply to some species and fishing methods.

Anglers can purchase:

Annual license: $26 for Michigan residents or $76 for nonresidents (both carry an additional $1 surcharge).
Daily license: $10 per day.
Youth license: $2 for anglers ages 16 and younger (optional).

Licenses can be purchased online or through the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app. An online auto-renew option is now available. Anglers can select the option to automatically purchase future licenses as they become available.
