Serving the 15th State Senate District

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is always one of my favorite holidays! I love the opportunity to get together with loved ones, share what we are thankful for, and create memories that will last a lifetime. This Thanksgiving I hope that you’ll join me in taking the time to give thanks. And I hope you’ll also take time to remember all those who are serving and protecting our great country day and night.

Fighting for parents’ rights in education

Despite what some have said recently, parents have the right to be involved in their children’s education, and to make their voices heard!

That’s why I, along with several of my colleagues in the Senate, called on the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to withdraw its membership and affiliation from the National School Board Association (NSBA) following the organization’s push for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute parents as “domestic terrorists.”

It was recently revealed that the NSBA coordinated with the White House to urge federal authorities to deploy counterterrorism measures against parents – parents! – who are upset with the direction of their local school policies.

This is inexcusable, and I believe it raises serious concerns about the National School Board Association, its leadership, and its ability to advocate on behalf of local education. Several state school board associations, including those in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, have already voted to break ties with the NSBA.

In my letter to the Michigan Association of School Boards, I wrote that “Parents have the right to speak up when it comes to how their children are being educated. And they should forever have the right to make their voices heard. The NSBA’s view of them as ‘domestic terrorists’ is offensive to millions of Michigan families who are properly invested in their children’s lives, and rightly concerned about the direction of their local schools.”

National Adoption Month celebrates and raises awareness of adoption.

Not a day goes by that I am not thankful for how adoption has impacted my family. Kathy and I can personally testify to how much of a blessing adoption can be to everyone involved.

There are many children in need of adoption, so please visit click here for more information about how you can help. Or contact my office for assistance and more information.

Honoring our veterans

I had the privilege of attending a pinning ceremony for veterans at Westlake Health Campus in Commerce Township on Nov. 11. This was a festive occasion with full color guard. Thank you to Westlake for making this happen.

Michigan Turkeys

It’s almost turkey day! Are you going to be eating one of the 46 million turkeys consumed on Thanksgiving?

The total economic impact that the turkey industry has in Michigan comes out to be $100 million annually. We owe a big thank you to Michigan turkey farmers for their hard work throughout the year.
